News does not happen in isolation. Never has. Never will.
There has been a lot of chatter about ties between India, Iran & the ogre that is the US. Yep, there are geopolitical considerations involved but that is not all there is to it. Fighter aircraft, Osama, terror, pressure tactics; all stand aside to give prominence to energy security.
It's All (About) Gas
Remember the IPI pipeline? Iran-Pakistan-India. Rings a bell? A chime even? Suits the three countries involved though definitely a kick in the crotch to the self-styled boss of bluster - the US of A. Remember the Farsi Oil Fields? Chilling peacefully in ONGC's books since 2002. All this, tied to another inconspicuous news item that appeared yesterday. RIL's reticence to thoroughly review & bring into the public domain the quantity of gas from its numerous K-G fields.
The Giant of Jamnagar, he of the 27-storied, Greek named, modernist altar of excess, has refused to clarify how much gas he, er, his company is sitting on. Sorry about the horrifying visuals accompanying that, intentional, typo.
Gas defies the laws of gravity but not really.. What goes up, must not come down. It just changes form, does gas. So, gaseous considerations have altered our perception of Iran. No point in alienating the Trash-Talker of Tehran to mollify and cozy up to the Wolves of Washington. The Duds in delhi are making a cardinal error of judgement. Closer ties with the Serial Flirt of Islamabad & his boringly pragmatic PM will calm down the Rantings from Rawalpindi. The dude with the name of a legendary bakery from Pune must realise that like most things he spouts, this is also about gas. Essentially hot air, his area of specialisation.
The fields are key to the pipeline. South Pars, supposedly humongous, is waiting to be operationalised. Security of the pipeline and the negotiations around the price of the damned thing running through other countries in transit can easily be thrashed out. It's just that there are too many powerful peeps whose interests will be trampled upon. Therefore the delay and eventual shelving of the project.
For once though, this gas is beneficial to the three parties concerned. May fields of, geopolitical, influence be damned!
